Ama Mauricio Fabia
1876-1961
Father of Estrella System
The first generation of the estrella system was founded by the late legendary "Estoque Maestro" Mauricio Fabia. Mauricio was born in Manaoag, Province of Pangasinan, Philippines. Mauricio dedicted his entire life to scientifically, create his own estelo estrella de estoque. His vast knowledge of many styles, helped him forge the estrella system, which aided him as a police officer and also during personal altercations. Mauricio was beleived to have a gift of power known as amulet(anting-anting), His power helped him on many occasions and he become a legendary Bastonero. At the age of twenty four he was appointed as a police officer in the neighbouring town of San Jacinto, Mangaldan, Manaoag, and Mapandan where he met his wife Alejandra Quinto a younger sister of the well known bastonero Francisco Quinto.
The estrella system was practiced secretly only amongst family members. Estrella includes the Ocho tiro Orihinal (eight original strikes), composed of four striking angles: vertical, horizontal, diagonal and backhand diagonal. The eight strikes was reduced to five striking patterns with a thrusting technique called (estocada) and became known as Estrella Cinco Tiros.
The Fabia Estrella system of Sinkatan-Arnis is composed of different fighting styles that incorporate the systems: ruedo, compas, serrado, estocada and de pasada. The system was passed on to the next of kin, Saturnino Quinto Fabia and two of his grandsons Alfonso Fabia and Bernardo Fabia Salinas.
At that time, the well known Bastoneros in the neighbouring towns of Pangasinan were: Francisco Quinto, Fausto Navarro, Pablo "Japang" Navarro, Ricardo Golison of Mapandan, Pangasinan Eugenio Nati, Ricardo de Vera, of Mangaldan Pangasinan, Arturo Espinoza, of Santa Barbara, Pangasinan, Emeterio Samson, Pablo Lalaquil, Jose Riola, Eugenio Quarisma of Manaoag, Pangasinan, and the legendary Santiago "Tiago" Toledo of Lingayen,Pangasinan.
After the death of Ama Mauricio Fabia his son Saturnino Quinto Fabia became the successor of the estrella system. The system was practiced secretly, and later he passed it to his nephew, Bernardo Fabia Salinas. Master Salinas was taught at an early age by his grandfather, and later trained with his uncle Saturnino Quinto Fabia. Master Salinas survived thru many traditional sessions of mental and physical training. The styles helped him to forge and meld the system into his being and create a fearless warrior. Through many bruises and tough times, Master Salinas survived and became dedicated. He continues to show his admiration for his grandfather and his uncle, through his passion for his heriditary family system of estrella de estoque.
For many years the family system was forgotten, In 1986, Bernardo Fabia Salinas returned to the Philippines to research his family's system and revive it for the future generation. At this time, he founded the SFMA in honor of the successor, founder and creator of his family system (Saturnino, Fabia, Mauricio & Alfonso).
The third generation of the estrella system was introduced in North America by Maestro Bernardo Fabia Salinas. His goal is to improve the system for teaching, by including the origins and philosophies of his system within the training format for his students and practitioners. Maestro Salinas remain as one of the most attentive students of Sinkatan-Arnis. Since emigrating from the Philippines in 1974, Maestro Salinas has returned to the Philippines every second year with his students to train with the grandmaster and other masters.
Maestro Salinas is the Canadian representative of the SFMA and teaches the estrella system of Sinkatan-Arnis under the supervision of Grandmaster Saturnino Quinto Fabia of the Philippines.
